I am a freelance journalist and have been awarded a journalism fellowship from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research to explore what the experience of egg donation is like in Canada.

I am interested in talking with egg donors about their experiences. I am interested in people currently donating or considering donating, as well as those who have donated in the past. I am interested in both positive and negative experiences.

Few acts can be as touching as providing a couple struggling to have children the opportunity to raise a family. First accomplished in 1983, this procedure has become a realistic option for couples struggling to produce children. Aside from the benefits to the future family, donors also receive a great amount of personal satisfaction from this act. For the donors themselves, after they have provided their eggs, their role is complete.

Indeed, some donors might be willing to donate because of less than respectable motives; donors are typically paid thousands of dollars for their contributions. However, the chance to make a family happy and possibly find medical cures through biomedical research is enough for many donors to make this choice. Indeed, 30% of donors reported altruistic motivation as their sole reason for donating. Even those that do donate for monetary compensation, 20%, do have legitimate reasons behind needing the financial reward such a procedure can provide: 45% of first-time donors are students. Nevertheless, some risks accompany the procedure of donating eggs.

Unlike men donating sperm, women are limited on the number of times they can donate eggs, mostly because of the medication used in the IVF (In vitro fertilization) process. Indeed, health risks do exist, including bleeding from the oocyte recovery procedure and a negative reaction to the hormones used to induce hyperovulation. In rare cases, liver failure or even death might occur, although a large study conducted in the Netherlands found only a 1 in 10,000 rate of death from egg donation.

Because the long-term effects of this procedure have not been studied extensively, it is difficult to predict some of these possible health risks, although research points out risks appear low. Some evidence suggests a higher risk of ovarian cancer, in addition to future fertility complications. However, it does appear that repeated oocyte donation cycles fail to accelerate ovarian aging. Nevertheless, psychological effects may arise from donation with 1 in 5 reporting some emotional change. Both positive and negative affects reported. However, two thirds of women reported being pleased with the procedure and its outcome.

As far as fertility manipulation is involved, egg donation and IVF is a relatively safe procedure with predictable results from the procedure and associated medication. Compared to other fertility manipulation options, egg donation remains very safe. Women choosing to remain sexually active through the use of oral contraceptives have been victims of arguably more frequent and serious side effects, including heart attack, strokes, blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, and gallbladder disease. The slew of Yaz lawsuits, a common and highly-marketed oral contraceptive, point to the danger inherent in this birth control option. In fact, taking some forms of birth control make potential donors ineligible. Therefore, potential egg donors need to consider their lifestyle and health before choosing to make this contribution. While this procedure might not initially appeal to many women, the knowledge that one helped a relative, gave a family a new start or advanced science is a medical gift that few other opportunities present.

Done with my uterus

I had an ablation of the uterus last week. Part of me hurts because I don't feel like I'm 100% woman anymore. I can't have anymore children even if I wanted to. I don't, but still. Not having control of that bothers me. However, struggling with 14 day menstrual cycles bothers me much much more and an ablation can nearly cure that. If I'm the unlucky 10%, then I'll still have periods and they'll be light/fewer days. I can handle being that unlucky.

I tried to tell this doctor that my body eats through pain killers like nothing he's ever seen and he didn't seem to believe me. He did when I cried out in pain during the actual procedure. It was a nightmare, but I survived. They felt bad for me and gave me more pain killers, but they wouldn't kick in until I got home. Oh well, life goes on and it's time to move forward. In about 4 weeks, the discharge will stop and I can say hello to a new (hopefully) period-free life.

Thank heavens for my private health insurance. It took 2 weeks between the time I first met with my doctor for the first time and the day of the ablation. If I lived in a country where socialized health care was in place, I would probably have been on a waiting list for years. One of my Canadian friends was astounded when I told her how quickly everything went.

As if I haven't tortured myself enough....

Today I had a Sonohystogram and Culdocentesis (yeah, I can barely pronounce them myself) and they were not fun! The lady who called me did not suggest that I take Midol or some mild pain killer to take the edge off so I was a bit surprised when I arrived. The Sonohyst was like the worst case of menstrual cramps that I could possibly get. Basically, the doctor injects a bunch of fluid into my uterus and then does a vaginal ultrasound so he can get a better look at the inside.

The Culdocentesis was a test performed because of my abnormal pap smear. He takes a fine needle and samples the area behind my cervex for further testing. That hurt too, I did my best not to make any sounds. My legs were shaking when I got up to walk, probably from tightening them in reaction to the pain.

So tomorrow, I get to have even more fun than today. I am having an ablation of the uterus. Hopefully that will cure my long periods or take them away completely. On the bright side, I get Vicodin. That should help with the pain I'll experience for the next couple of days.

Abnormal Pap Smear

A nurse called me and told me that my pap smear came back abnormal. What does that mean?? I just remember the nurse mentioning one of the reasons could be HPV and telling me to come in later today so they could take a sample of the membranes in my cervex. I looked up HPV and I just don't think there's any way I could have that so I'm not worried. Still....

Maybe I will finally get answers to why my body is misbehaving.

Ablation

After many months of dealing with 12-14 day periods, I've started seeing a new doctor. He was recommended by a good friend who called him a "wizard" when it comes to a woman's issues. I may have menorrhagia which is a common problem for women. I have nearly every symptom, one of which is long periods.

This new doctor is also a fertility specialist and was very impressed with my egg donations, I was almost embarrassed by how much he was praising me. I think it must hit home for him because he sees couples on a daily basis who struggle with their fertility. I think he will take good care of me.

One of the treatments for menorrhagia is to have an ablation of the uterus. It would reduce the amount of bleeding and number of days that I have a period. The best case scenario is that it would stop my periods altogether. I have friend who had an ablation and she has not had a period since. That would be wonderful!

I did ask if menorrhagia could possibly be caused by the egg donations that I've done. The doctor assured me that there was no link, he thinks I am just 1 in 5 women who happen to suffer from bad periods and that being in my 30's has more to do with it. So it seems as if it's just coincidence.

Hypothyroid

I've recently been diagnosed with a hypothyroid. I am a bit surprised to have it at this age (I'm 31), but not completely blind-sided. My mom also has it and manages it well. I'm just glad we caught this early before it became something far worse. My friend got cancer of the thyroid, she believes it was a result of it being untreated for 20 years.

I don't know if this has anything to do with being an egg donor, but if it has anything to do with my overall health, then I'll always put it out there. The thyroid does regulate hormones in the body and I did mess with my hormones when I donated eggs. Maybe it's a coincidence or maybe not. I found a list of causes and medications was listed. The only medications I've been on regularly in the last 15 years are those I was given for egg donation.

Some of the symptoms of a hypo-thyroid that I have experienced are;
**irregular periods (see my other recent posts on that one),
**inability to lose weight or weight gain (I've got 5 pounds that I gained over the holidays, they are normally gone by March..... however, not this time),
**fatigue
**dry skin
**decreased concentration
**constipation
**cold intolerance

I'm now taking something called "Armor" which is a natural thyroid medicine, it has to be prescribed. It's made from the thyroid hormones of a pig so it's not synthetic. I told my doctor that I would take the synthetic stuff if the natural stuff didn't work. He thought that was fair.

Since there's no real news with me, I normally don't post these days unless I see something worth reading. So far my health is fine, I am back into shape and was able to hike 10 miles last week. The only thing worth mentioning is that I now have 4 light days of bleeding before my menstrual cycle actually starts. It used to be 2 (post donation).

I read a very interesting article in The Walrus about egg donation. It was long, but worth reading. What made this so interesting for me is that one doctor mentioned in the article was the first doctor I worked with at 'Create' in downtown Toronto. While I enjoyed being downtown and I have no real horror story, it was mostly an inconvenience. I can remember the staff telling me to be there by 8am sharp and I would arrive on time only to wait until noon to actually see the doctor. This happened every day, I fell asleep at one point. My recovery was also rough. If I had to work with them again, I would have stopped at 1 donation.

4 days instead of 2

My last cycle came when I expected it to. It seems things are still on track, however, instead of 2 light days of bleeding, I had 4. Then I had my heavy day. I hope it's not like that every time. I kind of like having 2 days, it's a warning to take care of it and it's not like I would be surprised by a gush in public. I can remember two instances where I walked a girl into the bathroom because her period came and she didn't notice the red on her clothes. I always felt embarrassed for them. 4 days of spotting is too long, I'm thinking "hurry up already!" These days, I don't know what the new norm is for me. While I didn't end up in the hospital or have any serious side effects from donating my eggs, my cycles have changed.

Limits

There are regulations in place to limit how many times a woman can donate her eggs, but apparently not for men. I ran across an article about a man who may have fathered 400 children! Click here to read it, I will also add a link to the right. I understand the biggest reason for limits on egg donation is for the health of the woman. We go through a lot (hormonal injections, a surgical procedure, etc) and a man simply needs 5 minutes, a cup and a magazine. I think it's actually more important to have national regulations on the number of sperm donations than egg donations. If one man can father 400 children, can you imagine the future problems? The chances increase that these kids could grow up and date one another *shudder* which is a whole other genetic problem.

Odd period

Last Tuesday (the 8th of December), I started to spot. In past experiences, I spot for 2 days and then bleed heavily like a regular period and taper off within 5 days. Well I spotted long than I wished to and it seemed to be tapering off. I started to wonder if this was it. A very light period? But I put on a different pair of jeans (ones with magnets in my pockets) and the next day the blood came (Saturday is my official day 1). Maybe it was magnets and maybe it was coincidence. I was starting to worry that I had another odd ball period. Still, I'm hoping this wont be the new norm.

My cycle was 37 days apart this time, which is semi-normal. I can't complain much, it's MUCH better than having them every 12 days. I've never been like clockwork and I'm pretty sure the stress of the holidays plus a new gym membership is the reason I'm a few days late. Stress is the #1 reason for my periods not coming when they are expected. I am beginning to accept that nothing is the way it used to be. Not only have I reached 30 years of age, but I've donated my eggs six times. This is bound to have a permanant effect on my body.

Light at the end of the tunnel

All is right in the world for me. I started my period yesterday which is 36 days after the last day 1. This is more normal for me, my cycles are usually around 32 days apart. Something worked, I'm not sure what it was. My chiropractor would like to think the adjustments to my lower back were the trick and I think that was a huge contributor to getting my body back on track. Only time will tell if things are truly back to normal, I will know in a couple of months.

is MUCH better than 12 days. Something is working and it seems my body is beginning to regulate. Today is my official day 1 of a period and if feels more normal than the others. I have cramping and heavy bleeding. With those other periods, it was light and there were no cramps. I have been spotting since Friday the 25th so I knew it was coming, but didn't expect it to be a totally normal period. Obviously cramps are not fun, but this is still good news to me. I'll take my cramps if it means my body is bouncing back.

My Chiropractor is adjusting my lower back 3 times per week, we started doing that in the 2nd week of this month. I think this is like a science project to him, he probably doesn't get cases like mine too often. I did not tell him I was an egg donor because I know him personally and I don't think he could keep a secret to save his life. This is just one of those personal things that I don't want floating around my small town. I believe Chiropractic can do wonders for any part of the body. The spine is a lifeline with over 90K nerve endings. If just one of them is squeezed or pinched, then whatever it's attached to (organs) will not function at 100%. I think it's impossible to have a perfect spine, Chiropractic is maintenance for me - like an oil change is for a car.

I got a call from a nurse at my OBGyn's office and all of my blood work is normal. Normal hormone levels, normal everything so that's good news. If I was sticking to my 12 day cycle, then I would have started my period last week (Friday, I think) and so far there is no blood. So it looks like my body is starting to self-regulate. I'm still drinking a little Flor-Essence tea in the morning and at night for deep detoxing and I have been seeing the Chiropractor three times per week. I don't know if those things help or if it's just a coincidence..... if I get results, then I'm happy. I believe prayer has played a huge part as well.

My appointment

Today, I saw my OBGyn and discussed my irregular and frequent cycles. She agreed with the doctor in Canada, that this doesn't seem to be a health concern. However, just to rule certain things out, she has ordered a bunch of tests. I need to fast and go in tomorrow morning for a blood test. We discussed some options; go on birth control for 2 cycles and then go off of it to see if my body resets itself or let my body try for another month or two before using birth control. I'm never excited about using birth control so I'm going to take the 2nd option. If I do end up needing birth control, then she said she'd prescribe Marvelon 21 or 28 since that one seemed to be the best match for me (didn't cause moodiness or headaches).

So it's a waiting game. If my body is still on the 12 day cycle, then I should start again on Friday. Even if I go an extra 2 or 3 days, that's an improvement so I'm crossing my fingers.

Spoke with the nurse

The nurse called last Thursday as expected and I ran down the list of symptoms. She had never heard of this before so she told me she'd speak with the doctor and get back to me. She said it didn't sound like something to be worried about health wise, but it's mostly an annoyance. She said she once bled a lot when she had a fibroid so that might be something to get tested for.

Today she called me back after speaking with the doctor, he has also never heard of this happening to an egg donor. He said he didn't think it was a health concern, but couldn't say anything for sure without doing some tests. He said my OBGyn should run their own tests to see what they come up with. The main thing he wanted to pass along to me was that he wasn't worried and didn't think I should worry either. He thinks (and I hope) my body will balance itself with time.

Tomorrow is my OBGyn appointment so hopefully I will get answers soon.

I have an actual period again, the spotting was just leading up to more blood. Again, it's 12 days apart and this is now the 4th time it has happened. The good news is that I finally get to talk to a nurse from the clinic in Canada. Maybe she will have some answers for me, I will get a call tomorrow around 8am.

I'm having some very light spotting. I don't really need a tampon, but I use one so I can keep an eye on things. I'm not cramping so that's a plus. I bought a tea called Flor*Essence from the company called Flora. It's supposed to be for detoxing or a really deep cleansing of the body. I'm also taking a supplement for regulating hormones naturally. I hope that makes a difference, I always like to try natural first before medicating. I don't know if it's too much to ask after all I've done, but I hope God will allow me to age gracefully without having to take prescription drugs to live.

I did hear back from my agency, they mentioned me in a conference call with the nurse in Toronto. The nurse will probably talk to the doctor at some point and get back to my agency - who will then get back to me. What a crazy thing, huh? I don't know why I can't speak with the doctor myself and eliminate two steps.

I was instructed to make an appointment with a doctor here so I did that. I have an appointment with my OBGyn on September 15th. I don't know how much she would know about the after effects of a donation, but she can order tests and hopefully give me some answers.

I have calmed down a bit and the crying spells have stopped, but I'm still worried. My family all reassures me that everything will be fine and I want to believe that. I just have to move on and hope it really is just my body trying to regulate itself.

12 days

This is the 3rd time I've had a period when I wasn't suppose to. They are each 12 days apart (starting with the early period). I can't deny that I am officially scared. This morning I woke up around 5am because I needed to use the bathroom, I was holding onto the wall on the way there because I was dizzy. I was also just a little nauseous, but not enough to feel like I might actually throw up. I woke up again when my alarm went off at 7am and hoping that dizzy spell would pass, but it didn't. I wondered if it was a problem with my equilibrium and I didn't really make any connection until I saw blood tonight. There were no cramps so no warning that I was going to start another period. The dizziness may not be related, but I am putting it all out there just in case.

My agency is good about getting back to me when I email, but the clinic must be busy because they haven't been able to get any answers for me. I sent another email tonight with a more urgent request that I hear from a nurse. I'd make an appointment with a doctor in my home town, but chances are pretty slim that they'd know anything about the after-effects of multiple donations. It's still not a common practice and even less so in my conservative town. Hopefully I get some answers soon.

Bleeding again

I did have a regular period last week and it tapered off by the following Wednesday (the 5th). Today I am bleeding again and it has been almost two weeks since the start of my last period. I'm a little scared and confused, hoping this is just a crazy adjustment phase for my body. There is that fear that I've done irreparable damage. Hormones are not something people should mess with and I knew that going into this. I just hope my body needs time to regulate and everything will turn out just fine in the end. I did email my agency to ask that they talk to the doctor/nurse about it. I just need some peace of mind.

I was surprised this morning by what seems to be my period. I wasn't expecting it for about 20 more days. After the last donation, I had a period 2 weeks later as expected. With my last 5 donations, I wouldn't have the next one for about 45-50 days. It's only been 28 days. I'm not sure what to think about that, it's not normal for me. Hopefully everything is okay. I guess I will know in a couple of days if it really is a period or just some heavy spotting. I will be watching my next couple menstrual cycles for anything abnormal and hopefully they get regulated again.

I emailed my agency coordinator and asked if they could give me an update on the latest donation. I love that this doctor is willing to share that tiny bit of information, hopefully it's good news. I will update again when I hear from them.

I've added some new links to the research links section, I've also embedded the one video below. Both are the negative sides to egg donation, two different women with a terrible experience. I think it's fair to add these stories because women should know the risks before making the decision to donate their eggs. So far, I've been lucky. I work with a great agency, an awesome clinic (doctor and staff) and I've had no serious side effects. However, I honestly don't know what lasting damage I've done and it does worry me. I will say this to young women who are thinking of donating their eggs: Please think VERY carefully about doing this if you've never had your own children. While it may work out just fine for you like it has for me, can you really put a price on losing the ability to have your own children?

Almost normal

I was able to hike about 15 miles of rough, steep terrain over a 2-day period and it hadn't been a week since the retrieval. I did feel some random little pains in the area of my ovaries here and there, but nothing too painful. I just kept drinking fluid and taking frequent breaks which wasn't hard - I am addicted to my camera and loved taking pictures of the scenery. I had a "Sherpa" (my husband) so I didn't have to haul anything too heavy which made it easier. Today my legs are a little sore, but no pains anywhere else. I think my lower abdominal area should be back to normal by this weekend. It's starting to shrink which makes me feel better.... it's a bit depressing to have a tight fit in my lose jeans and have to choose baggy shirts to hide the bulge. I think that I am emotionally adjusting to the drop in hormonal levels as well, that usually takes a little more time.

It was a long day starting at 3:30am. I flew with United and will probably never do that again. I remember how good Delta was and United just doesn't compare. So if I can possibly avoid United, then I will. My suitcase was 10 pounds overweight so they had me remove that excess and put it in a bag to take on board or pay a $125 fee. That doesn't make sense, the weight goes on the airplane anyway. Perhaps they have new limits on what their baggage handlers should have to lift? I don't know, but I was able to lift it and it wasn't that heavy. So that was a bit of an inconvenience, but my sore arms will eventually recover. Thank heavens I didn't try to do all of that yesterday or I probably would have been forced to pay the fee, I was in no shape to haul the extra carry-on.

Today, I look and feel about 3 months pregnant. This is one of the huge drawbacks of a donation, I experience some serious bloating. It won't go away for about two weeks, just in time for another road trip. I should expect my first post-donation period 12-14 days after my retrieval (so around July4th). After that, I get a 45+ day break from periods. As far as pain goes, I'm doing much much better. I still have a couple of sharp pains here and there, but nothing like the first day.... it's manageable.

Extra day of rest

I like having an extra day of rest, it's so nice to sleep in and relax rather than rush to the airport and haul a suitcase around. I did get a new suitcase (finally) that has 4 wheels, it's so convenient and easy which will come in really handy tomorrow. Today I'm feeling sore, but much better than yesterday. I think my nausea is completely gone, I took my antibiotics like I'm suppose to. I'm guessing that yesterday was just a bad mix of sitting up too soon, taking Tylenol plus the antibiotics around the same time and add some food to that..... you get the idea. It also still hurts to use the bathroom, but I know from experience that it gets much better with each passing day.

I just threw up, but I feel a little better now. I can't remember if that's ever happened later on in the day after a donation, I might have to go back and search. I know I did right after a donation once when I was sitting up too soon, I remember the nurse scrambling to grab something for me to throw up in. I think I will lay down, maybe being up and walking around is too much for me right now.

Donation Day

This morning I went in for my retrieval. Everything went well, there were no problems. The doctor started me out with an IV in my right hand and then had me lay down before administering the drugs. I felt it as soon as it hit my bloodstream, I felt like I weighted 1000 pounds and then partially dozed off. I don't remember anything this time, the next thing I remember was the nurse putting my underwear and pants back on. I had a good nap right there on the table. The retrieval started at about 8 am and was sitting up by about 1pm. I was in a little bit of pain this time so the nurse was able to track down some samples of Tylenol which was really nice of her. She also helped me to the cab. I say this often and I don't mind repeating it, but this doctor and the staff are the best! They are very hospitable and easy to work with.

Before the donation when I was in the doctor's office signing the usual papers, he told me that my eggs were top notch. He said people like me are in demand and that he would save me as his "wild card" for a couple who really needed me. He explained that some couples have been through several donors and that he would pull out his wild card for those people. That made me feel good, I'm glad to have been able to help. I wish it was easier to do it, though. Men have it easy in that department.

Right now I am still a little drowsy and feeling a little nauseated. I ordered a light lunch and some ginger ale, hopefully that helps. Wow they are quick! In the time it took me to type this, room service arrived :)

Trigger night

Today's ultrasound was good. I didn't get an exact count, but I estimate two more follicles on each side. I'm sure the intended parents will get plenty of eggs from me, hopefully they are able to have as many babies as they want. Later on this morning I got a call from the clinic with instructions on giving myself the trigger shot (HCG) so I will be doing that at 9pm tonight. This is the shot that makes me feel like I got a kick in the stomach and makes me feel pregnant. It does enough to my hormone levels that I do experience some moodiness, it takes a couple of weeks to recover.

Tonight, I am suppose to take 2 antibiotics (one at dinner time and the other before bedtime). I have to take 4 more tomorrow. My retrieval is set for Monday morning so I'm looking forward to that. The doctor and staff are amazing, I would never work with anyone else. I feel lucky to have had so many good experiences with them.

Yesterday was nice outside so I headed for downtown Toronto after the phone call. I visited Casa Loma, a gorgeous castle with secret passages, underground tunnels and a wonderful history. I also went to Niagara Falls (I never get tired of it) and saw the fireworks. I set up my camera equipment and camped for an hour in the perfect spot for an hour before they went off. I got some incredible photos, some I may be able to sell. It was an awesome day! Today it's raining so I just window shopped at the mall, mostly walking around for exercise. They have a gym here, but it's a bit creepy downstairs when no one is around. I'm not sure what I'll do tomorrow, I guess it all depends on the weather so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Update

Well the update for today is that I have 13 follicles on the right and 11 on left. If things go the way they usually do, I will have 2 more on each side tomorrow and I'm guessing they will have me give myself the trigger shot tomorrow night. I'll find out around noon when they call me.

It rained a lot yesterday so I didn't go anywhere scenic - there's no sense in pulling out my expensive camera equipment and getting it wet. I did enjoy some shopping at one of my favorite places in this area, we don't have a clothing store like it where I'm from. Today's weather looks promising, I may go into downtown Toronto.

Good news day

I'm in Canada, it sure is beautiful here. I'd say the weather is great too if I loved rain, but it's not bad.... just a little sprinkle. I hear it will let up in the next day or two. This morning I went to the clinic for my blood test, ultrasound and a meeting with my agency liaison (and nurse at the clinic). The nurse who did my ultrasound told me I have 11 follicles on the right and 9 and left. This is excellent news! My numbers were usually much lower on the first day in Canada. Another egg donor suggested I eat a hard boiled egg every day, it gives me the extra daily protein I need to hopefully produce more follicles. It sounds like good sense.... eat eggs to make healthy eggs. Steak is also a great source of protein and I have had that as well. I drink a lot of liquid which keeps me from over-stimulating and I take my vitamins. I'm not sure how effective all of this is, but it doesn't hurt to try. I started doing this during my last donation in February and the final egg count was higher than my previous donations. If I get good results this time, then I will consider my new routine a good one.

After my ultrasound, I met with the nurse who takes care of all donors from my agency. She gave me my usual instructions and a bag of drugs (HCG, 2 types of antibiotics and some extra needles). I asked how the last couple was doing because I remember hearing that she miscarried after the first try in February. I was told that she is pregnant, the news totally made my day! I hope everything works out for them and they get a healthy baby. This is why I put my body through all of this, I get good news and it makes me want to keep going. It's too bad this could be my last donation, the doctor likes to retire his donors after 6 donations. Occasionally, he approves of a 7th, but I'm 30 now so it's possible I may not get to visit Toronto again. I sure love it here, I don't think I would ever have experienced this beautiful area if not for my donations. And I'm positive that when it's time to pick a vacation destination, my husband and I are more likely to pick a place we've never visited. If I do get approved for a 7th donation, I'm most likely to do it in September or October. I made a promise to myself that I would NEVER visit during the coldest months of winter, I nearly gave my bottom frostbite :)

I started the Gonal F today after getting the thumbs up that everything was on schedule. I had my blood test and ultrasound on Wednesday, those results were sent to the clinic in Canada. Once the doctor sees that my ovaries are responding to the Lupron and that my system has successfully suppressed, he lets the agency know and they tell me. I leave on Wednesday for Canada, the next few days will be very busy as I prepare.

I can remember feeling a bit loopy during past donation cycles and I recall it took a week or two for that to pass. Twice, I've been so tired in the afternoon that I took a nap and woke up thinking it was morning (even forgetting what day it was). That doesn't last long, I normally spend a minute waking up and then I realize the time and day. Today, I nearly passed out from pain. I am normally not a clumsy person, but I banged my elbow on a corner by accident and it killed! I got dizzy and it felt like the lights were dimming so I laid down on the floor and waited for it to pass. That might have nothing to do with the Lupron, but I thought I'd share that bit of information just in case.

Of course, Hotwire has the best deal on the web when it comes to rental cars. I know for sure that the same is true for flights and hotels as I've used them in the past for that. Hopefully there are no changes in my schedule, it's nearly impossible to make changes to a Hotwire deal. The last time I did so without being charged was for the July 2007 donation. I had to get a letter from the doctor letting Hotwire know that it was for medical reasons, it was a pain in the butt to jump through those hoops and it took several weeks for it to be approved for a refund. If everything goes according to plan, then I shouldn't have any problems.

Travel Plans

My agency booked my flight today. Before doing so, the travel coordinator emailed me and asked if I had any special requests. This is the first time they've asked me that, it was a very kind gesture! I took the opportunity to ask for aisle seats - it's hard to want to drink lots of liquid when I know I might be sitting by a window. I don't like to inconvenience people by having them move so I can climb out several times to use the bathroom. As soon as I start taking the drugs, I have to drink much much more than normal to keep my body from over-stimulating. Obviously.... I make lots of bathroom trips.

I also asked for the shortest flight possible. Once in the past, I was routed through Denver to fly straight to Toronto and it got me there when the sun was still up. It didn't have much of a price difference so it works out for everyone. I'm a morning person so I don't mind getting up early to catch my flight. The coordinator was kind enough to oblige so I only have 1 stop and will arrive with plenty of daylight left. Now I just need to book my rental car and I'm all set.

I received my protocol last week, at first I was really worried when I saw that the dates I will be in Canada are from June 17th through possibly the 24th (my retrieval was scheduled for the 22nd). My husband works and cannot get time off for that particular time and originally, my mom was planning to leave town on the 21st. However, she said she'd rather leave town later in the week so it will work out for me. Depending on when she leaves, I may have to find a friend to watch my boys for 1 day which won't be too hard.

Now I'm hoping I can recover enough to hike several miles the following weekend... as in 5 days after the retrieval. It shouldn't be too hard, I can stand up straight within 2 days of the procedure so the important thing is that I can pretend I didn't just have surgery. And as I mentioned earlier, my husband will be a big help to me! I've been looking forward to this hike since November of last year so hopefully everything happens on schedule or sooner.

I start Lupron on May 24th (this Sunday) and the Gonal F on June 12th. I should get a call today from the pharmacy, they normally send my drugs out overnight when I'm so close to starting them.

Tomorrow, I expect I will be starting my menstrual cycle. I normally spot for 2 days which started yesterday. So the process begins. I counted out 7 weeks (the typical amount of time from my day 1 and the retrieval) and it looks like I will be in Toronto around June 21st for the procedure.

If I'm lucky, they will work it out so that I can donate a day or two earlier - I'd like to be home by the 21st. Things are much easier that way (in the childcare department), plus I need a few days to put myself back together before I leave town again for a 2-day hike the following weekend which includes hauling my tripod, camera and several lenses..... and no, I'm not 100% crazy - I've invited my husband along for the "fun."

I received the news today that the intended parents I just donated to did not get pregnant. I'm sad about that, but hoping for better news soon. I know it's not my fault, other couples have become pregnant as a result of my egg donations, but I still feel bad about it. They still have frozen eggs so I'm hoping and praying that they will keep trying and receive good news in the near future. I'm trying not to let the bad news get me down, but it's hard. I can't imagine how they are feeling right now.

It's so odd to share that I've officially started my menstrual cycle with the world, but since this is mostly a journal..... who cares right? It's easier for me to see the patterns this way. I find myself going back to older posts to remind myself of when things happened and what's normal. It helps me to plan ahead. So now I just wait 45-50 days (May 4th is my estimate) for the next cycle to begin and that's where all of the action will be.

Hopefully the doctor will tailor my protocol to my summer schedule, I did tell them I needed to be back by June 20th otherwise we'd need to put this off until September. That shouldn't be hard if they go by the 7 week rule. An egg donation is typically 7 weeks from day 1 of the menstrual cycle.... so if it started May 4th, then I'd be donating on June 22nd. He'd only have to shave a couple of days off somewhere in the protocol. That's only assuming everything is either on time or early. Early is better :)

See there I go again, planning everything .... my brain must be wired differently.

The clinic wants to give me a break from birth control so I am guessing we are going to do this cycle without controlling it. That scares me just a little bit, but I will trust that they know what they are doing. I once did a donation without birth control, it was for my 2nd donation in July of 2007. My cycle came 2 days late and it threw off all of my plans so this is where my fear comes from. I would be crazy to say I like birth control, but I do like the control when it comes to making plans.

If everything works the way it should (and has the last 4 donations), then my menstrual cycle, or "day 1," should come around Tuesday. Then after that, my next menstrual cycle will start in 45-50 days which is somewhere around the 1st or 2nd week of May. It's a huge gap and it really freaked me out after the first donation. I can remember emailing my agency because I was worried and I knew I wasn't pregnant. Finally, I found a forum to ask other egg donors and I realized it was totally normal.

I got an email from my agency asking me about the possibility of one last donation. I remember the doctor in Canada mentioning that they'd retire me after 6 donations so if I chose to donate again, then it would be my last. This particular clinic has been very good to me and I can't see myself working with anyone else.

This new couple has inquired about the month of June and I have responded that the last week of May through the third week of June works best for me. Otherwise, I would need to wait until September. I have a lot going on this summer, things I can't move around, so we'll see how it works out. I'm still recovering from this donation, but I'm excited about the possibility of helping one last couple. I like that I would be in Toronto during nice weather, it will make a great final trip.

Yesterday was very long, but I made it back safely and am very glad to be home with my family. I sure missed them! I know they missed me too, the boys were suppose to be asleep and they stayed awake in their beds until I came in to see them.

Today, I am still taking it slowly because my abdominal area is tender. If I move too quickly or sneeze, then I feel a bit of pain in the general area of my ovaries. Unfortunately, I've been sneezing a lot because I have a cold (I started to feel it coming on yesterday). Normally, I get over these things pretty quickly because I exercise and take vitamins regularly. However, I have to take it easy for the next two weeks so I'm counting on my vitamins to help me.

It really cheered me up to get this special delivery.....

My intended parents had them sent and they left a very kind note for me. I am praying for them to be blessed with a successful pregnancy.

I'm still a little drowsy and I can't walk standing up straight, but I'm not in real pain either (unless I move too quickly). I took some Tylenol because I know the pain killer I got this morning will wear off really soon. I was able to eat and drink without nausea. I'm still bleeding which is not typical of my past donations, but I'm not worried about it. I'm pretty sure it will taper off overnight (glad I brought pads just in case).

Something I forgot to mention earlier, the doctor gave me his cell phone number in case any problems come up. It's another reason I love this clinic, they are genuinely concerned about my health and want me to be comfortable. I am pretty sure I won't need to call the doctor, but it was very kind of him to give it to me anyway.

Donation Day

I'm back at my hotel room, the donation went well. I was told they got 20 eggs which is wonderful! It just has to work out for this couple, I hope they get a whole family from this experience. I wrote a little "good luck" letter and let them know they can contact the agency if they ever want to be in contact with me. One of the nurses (also my coordinator at this fertility center) told me they wanted to send me flowers, that is such a sweet gesture.

I went in this morning at 7:30, they brought me to a room where the procedure was to be done. It felt like a fancy pap smear, that's the only way I can describe it. I got an IV in my right hand and once the drugs were injected through it, I felt like I was about 1000 pounds and sleepy. That still didn't keep me from chatting it up, they kept giving me more drugs to make me go to sleep, but that didn't work. I warned the doctor ahead of them. He made a joke about how I told him my bra size, but the nurse assured me I didn't and it was all pleasant chatting - nothing embarrassing (thank heavens).

After the procedure, the nurse led me to a bed where I could sleep off the drugs. Because I was given so much, it took a bit longer to be able to keep my eyes open. Once I was able to stand, she led me out to a taxi to get me back to the hotel room. I'm feeling fine now, there's no pain or anything. I am still feeling the effects of the drugs, I will be sleeping it off as soon as I'm done with this post. I also have some bleeding, but not too heavy.

HCG shot

Last night, I gave myself 1cc of HCG. I had to mix it first (clear liquid into a powder) and then pulled out 1cc into the needle to give myself the shot. It burned going in as I expected it would. I thought about pulling it out and giving myself the other half in a different area. But then I wondered why I'd want to hurt myself in two separate places. So I put a health magnet on the spot and there it sits right now. It's mostly an experiment, it seems my regular bruises go away faster when I use magnets so we'll see about this one.

I slept in until almost 10am this morning which is not usual for me, I normally wake up and watch the clock around 6am. I still have no idea what I want to do today, I don't want to be stuck in my hotel room so maybe I'll just grab my camera and start driving until inspiration hits me.

Tomorrow is my retrieval day. I can't have anything to eat or drink after midnight tonight (which is no problem as I never eat late at night). I need to call the bellman and ask to arrange a taxi for me, I can't drive home after the retrieval since I'll still have the sedatives in my system (and shouldn't be driving for 24 hours after). Hopefully everything goes well tomorrow and the couple gets a baby, that's what I'm really praying for.

I have a sense of humor so things that would normally bother other people make me laugh. For instance, the arguing couple next door who stay up late yelling at one another over silly things... I just put in my ear plugs when I'm done listening to it. I can literally hear everything through these walls. Maybe I should call them and offer to mediate. :) I can also hear the guy snoring when I wake up at 5:30am each morning. He sounds like a mixture of a guy choking to death while sawing a tree in half, it's really really loud. I'm glad I brought ear plugs.

Well the update is that I've probably peaked with how many follicles I can make. There was little difference in the number between yesterday and today. However I was told to take the usual drugs yesterday (rather than trigger as I predicted). I will end up triggering tonight at 8:45pm. I have to give myself a giant shot of HCG; this is the one that causes me a bruise, I literally feel like someone kicked me in the stomach each time I take it so I'm not looking forward to it. I also have to start the antibiotics tonight. This time I remembered to bring my acidopholis which will help restore good bacteria to my digestive system. Antibiotics kill everything including the good bacteria, it doesn't do me any favors in the bathroom.

My egg retrieval will be Tuesday morning which means I will have no extra day to recover as I was looking forward to. Oh well, I've travelled in that condition before.... just not with a missing wheel on my suitcase. The baggage handlers broke it somewhere on the way to Toronto. I managed to balance the suitcase on one wheel, but often scraped the other side and it kills my hands/wrists. Maybe I will track down a small suitcase dolly, I know Walmart sells them.

I went in this morning for my blood test and ultrasound. I decided to arrive 20 minutes after they opened because it seems like I have a shorter wait time and I was right. Yesterday I came a few minutes before they opened and there was a line, I do like to arrive early on my first day so I brought a book. Today I hardly had a chance to read, I was in and out within 20 minutes.

I got a call from the clinic letting me know I still need to take Lupron and 150 units of Gonal F. I've been taking that dosage since Wednesday. I must be sailing through this cycle. Today I had 9 follicles on my right and 11 on my left. There will probably be 2-3 more on each side tomorrow. I'm guessing they will have me give myself the trigger shot (HCG) tomorrow night. That will be perfect because I'll be visiting Niagara Falls and expect to be out late. Usually the morning after the trigger shot, I don't have to visit the clinic at all so I can sleep in.

Today started out a rainy day, but the sun has finally come out. Hopefully I will see more sun tomorrow. So far my kids are not upset with me. I think it really helps out to have their dad around to keep up with the routine. When we both left last fall, they refused to talk to us on the phone after a couple of days. They know I will bring them a souvenir so it lessens the separation anxiety this time around.

Craziest travel day

Yesterday, my day started at 3:30am. It took me a little over an hour to get ready and get the rest of my things packed. My husband and I buckled our sleepy kids into the van and headed for the airport. After my goodbyes, they drove off...... just in time for me to realize I forgot my passport (ahhhhhh!!!). It didn't do any good to flag him down, the airport is designed in such a way that he wouldn't see me. I panicked a little and then started to look around - thinking of a solution. I saw a taxi and had no other choice but to race home and then back again, I felt like a huge retard! I don't make mistakes like that very often, I'm usually very meticulous and organized. I made it back to the airport with only 5 minutes to spare before they stopped taking luggage. I still had about 30 minutes before my flight left. I got through the gate just in time to board the airplane, I was not the last one on so that made me feel good.

It was a very long flight, I stopped in Salt Lake City for a short layover and was able to give myself a shot of Lupron and Gonal F. It's always a little awkward doing it in the bathroom stall, there's no room and it feels unsanitary. Luckily I remembered to bring a few alcohol swabs with me. I then flew to JFK in New York City. When we arrived, we had to sit in the plane for half an hour because our gate wasn't ready. Apparently a woman decided not to fly so they had to unload the baggage and find her 4 suitcases. Ugh! At least we were running early and I had a 3 hour layover ahead of me so I wasn't in any hurry. I was excited to see the city from the plane in both daylight and after dark. It was nothing short of amazing. I tried to keep myself hydrated, but the longest flight from SLC to JFK was a window seat and I didn't want to constantly be jumping over people to use the bathroom. I ate the salted peanuts which helped (I was always advised to eat salty snacks while using these fertility drugs).

I got to Toronto at around 10pm and didn't actually get to my hotel room until 11:30pm. I will give a shout out to my Garmin Nuvi, it saved me time and stress! I drove straight to my hotel without any wrong turns. I'm still not used to the roads around here, although I have picked up a few things in my previous trips. I still can't navigate from the airport to the hotel without some help so it was worth every cent.

This morning I had my first appointment at the clinic, I had to be there at 7am. I had a blood test (which will probably show I'm a bit dehydrated so I can expect the doctor to call me and tell me I need to drink more) and I had my ultrasound. I have 5 follicles on the right ovary and 8 on the left. I can feel my ovaries, they don't hurt, but I am aware of them because they are larger. Once in awhile I get a little pain, but nothing I can't handle. Everything is going well so far, the staff is as friendly as I remember them and I'm ready to take a nap!

Tomorrow will be my busy day, I'll be doing laundry and packing so I don't know that I will post until after I arrive in Canada. I borrowed a laptop so I'll have internet access there. I just hope my travel day will be smooth. I looked up the weather for that area and there was a warning for travel delays. I'm starting to wish I had requested that they route me through Denver, I'd get to Toronto soooooo much sooner.

I am starting to notice just a tiny bit of pain in my right side (where my ovaries are) so I know they are growing. It was probably more noticeable because I work out at the gym and I pushed myself harder than usual this morning. I'm sure I will feel it more as the week progresses. Exercise is okay as long as I'm not jumping around and doing anything too strenuous. The wrong moves could cause my ovaries to twist which would be very damaging.

My shots are going well. I swear the Gonal F needles are just a little thicker, those shots give me quite the pinch. I hardly notice the Lupron injections. I will have to carry a couple of needles and the drugs with my carry on, so far I've avoided being questioned about it during previous donations. Hopefully my luck continues. It's not something I want to share with a stranger.

I started the Gonal F shots this morning as soon as I heard back from my agency. So I now take 10 units of Lupron and 225 units of Gonal F. It sounds like a lot of Gonal F, but the needles measure differently. It's probably only 2-3 times the amount of Lupron. It burned a bit going in today, I probably just stuck myself in the wrong spot. I am starting to see little dots on my stomach where I give myself the shots. By the end of next week, there will be little bruises all over to go with it. I was also feeling a little bit of nausea, it went away later this evening so I'm fine. It might be the extra hormones or it could be something totally unrelated.

I need to be vigilant about drinking more liquids now that I'm on Gonal F. This wont be too difficult, I bought Gatoraid powder so I will have an incentive to drink more. I am also suppose to add extra protein to my diet.

I went in for a vaginal ultrasound this morning. The lady who did the follicular ultrasound recognized me from last year. The lady told me there were quite a few follicles and everything looked good. It didn't last more than 5 minutes and I was on my way to the next place. I got my blood drawn for my estradiol level (E2). Both test results should be faxed over to the doctor in Ontario later on today. I start Gonal F on Friday when I hear back that it's okay to start. I can't believe I leave in just one week. Time has flown by.

Disoriented

Remind me never to take a Sunday afternoon nap right after injecting myself with Lupron. I woke up 2 hours later (I usually only sleep for an hour) plus I woke up feeling disoriented. I woke up thinking it was morning and I couldn't figure out why it was so light outside. Then my head cleared and I remembered it was still Sunday. Oy!

Nightmares & wierd dreams

I really shouldn't watch anything about babies at night on youtube. Seriously.

I got a youtube link from someone about 2 babies - it was funny and then I noticed the other "related" videos to the right. I started surfing youtube and came across the pro-life videos. I watched part 1-5 of "The Silent Scream." It is a documentary about what a baby goes through in an abortion, they actually show the baby in the ultrasound as it gets torn apart by the suction tool. I don't know why I watched it, it's like driving by a car accident or train wreck..... we all just have to look - it's human nature to be curious.

I was sitting there thinking about what I do as an egg donor and what I go through. There are people who want children so bad that they will spend thousands of dollars just to have the chance (and there are still no guarantees). I can't figure out why a woman won't just give her baby up for adoption rather than subject it to such undeserved violence. I wish all women who were considering an abortion could see these videos and then look at parents who are in emotional pain because they want a baby so desperately. To see all sides and still choose an abortion.... I just don't understand that.

Sorry to get all political. Perhaps it's the Lupron messing with my head, but I had nightmares about what I saw last night and weird dreams involving babies. I need to stick to happy/funny videos at night while taking Lupron.

Today is considered my "day 1" or the first day of my menstrual cycle. I was told not to start Gonal F until I had a period. The difference is that in the past, I would start my period just a couple of days before starting my Gonal F injections. In one case, I started late and had to put off my injections which threw off my entire trip (July 2007). But in this case, I still have a couple of weeks before I start Gonal F (February 20th is my first injection). Maybe the doctor is changing things a little bit.... I don't know. It's a different donation schedule for sure. I emailed my agency to ask if I'm suppose to start another period between now and then or if this is it? Perhaps it will yield more eggs for the intended parents to do it this way.... at least I hope that's the case.

Today I booked my car rental with Hotwire.com (still the best deal, I use them every time and am never disappointed). Hopefully nothing in my itinerary changes, it's nearly impossible to tweak anything with Hotwire. I'd have to pay full price with the car rental agency if I extended my trip. Otherwise, I save about $100 going with them.

I started Lupron on Tuesday, I take 10 units each morning and will until the doctor tells me to stop. They also booked my itinerary yesterday so I will be leaving on the 25th and returning on March 4th.

The sad news is that my husband won't be joining me due to his work schedule changing. I've gone solo before so I'll be okay, but I sure enjoy having someone along for the ride :( Oh well.

New Protocol

Today I received my protocol, my guess was way off. Every donation is a little different, but the quick rule of thumb is that I should count 7 weeks from the date of my last period and that is typically when I would donate according to the agency. Well this time, my tentative donation date is March 2nd. My protocol states I will fly out on February 25th, but doesn't give me a return date. I know from experience that they like to give me a full day of rest before flying me home so I will probably be returning on March 4th.

I will be starting Lupron on February 3rd, taking 1cc (or 10 units) every day. I start Gonal F on February 20th. It's a typical drug schedule, nothing new here. I should be getting my medications tomorrow, the pharmacy called me today to confirm my address and said they'd have it here tomorrow - I don't need it that fast, but it sure is good service.

Speed bump

We hit a minor snag in the process. The doctor I used for my vaginal swabs called and told me the lab rejected both of the tests taken last week. They didn't recognize (or couldn't use) the Canadian test kit and they could not use the expired kit from the doctor's office. The doctor had new ones in and asked me to come in for another test. I went in this morning for another vaginal swab. I asked them to put a rush on the results and they said they would, the clinic in Toronto should have the results by Thursday. Hopefully there are no more speed bumps in this process.

I had an appointment with my OBGyn on Tuesday for my vaginal swabs. The doctor was a bit confused by the kit I brought in, but since I didn't need to send it back to Canada, I just told her to use her swabs. The doctor in Canada only wants results so I don't think he cares what swabs are used.

I started my first sugar pill yesterday (birth control) so I should be starting my menstrual cycle within the next day or two. Maybe my face will clear up, I tend to break out while on birth control so I'm crossing my fingers for a break. I ordered some acne treatment online, hopefully that will make a difference.

To answer my last post about the weather concerns, I was assured that incidents were very rare that a donor is stuck or can't get to a destination. I am sure things will be better in February (keeping my fingers crossed).

Doing the math

I went back and compared past donations so I could get a good idea of when I could be donating. I figure it could be about February 21st. I may take my husband along for the ride, it is always nice having a travel companion.

The weather has me a bit concerned. Hopefully the clinic has a "worst case scenario" back up plan in case I can't travel or get stranded, I just emailed to ask because I was curious. One would think the weather will be better at the end of February, but who knows. We have had more snow in my hometown than we've had in years. Some experts are saying it will be a hard winter for everyone.

I couldn't put this book down

I finished reading "Confessions of a Serial Egg Donor" tonight and it was a page turner! I would recommend it to anyone thinking of becoming an egg donor. This author, Julia Derek, tells it like it is. I think this is a classic case of what happens when greed takes the driver's seat to a decision. Julia needed money, she was from Sweden and she saw egg donation as a way to stay in America as opposed to having to fly home as a result of insufficient funds. Unfortunately, she didn't stop at 1 or even a few egg donations. It was hard to keep up with her new lifestyle, the money was hard to turn down and she kept going. 12 egg donations later, her body shut down on her. She eventually recovered so the book ends on a happy note.

The lesson I come away with is that we should listen to our bodies! There are egg donation limits in place for a reason. Julia found a way to get around that with the help of an unethical egg donation broker. I like that this author doesn't blame anyone else for her decisions. I also like that she was honest, she was completely driven by money and not altruism. There are many women like her who could use a reality check. In the epilogue she quotes, "No amount of money in the world is worth gambling with your health." It is sad that she learned her lesson the hard way.

Day 1 and birth control

My menstrual cycle began today and I will be starting birth control tomorrow. I still have another month before the roller coaster ride begins.

I ordered the book "Confessions of a Serial Egg Donor" and it came a couple of days ago. I started reading it this morning and can't put it down. I'm nearly half way through it. So far, I've read about her experience through her first egg donation. Nothing nightmarish yet, but from reading the summary on the back of the book, she does go through quite an ordeal. I will write a more detailed review when I finish.

I read an article on MSN today which I will add to my links on the right. It is about the economy and how there has been a spike in sperm and egg donations. It also mentions selling plasma and hair. You can read it here. Here is a quote which stood out to me.

“I guess I could imagine economic difficulty inspiring increased inquiries,” Tipton said. “But egg donation is so complicated, donors are unlikely to do it only for the money.”

As an egg donor, I agree that the whole process is too much to go through for a donor who just needs some extra cash. There are easier and safer ways to earn it. Also, the screening process is pretty strict. There are age limits, weight limits, you must be a non-smoker, you can't be on public assistance (which would be an indication that money is the main motivation) and some agencies want their donors to be a certain height or taller. That is just the beginning. Later on, a long conversation with a psychologist is completed to be sure the potential egg donor is emotionally stable. There are blood tests and an OBGyn visit for more testing. Plus, the agency sends you information on the process and risks to your health. I think all of this is enough to scare away a lot of women who are just thinking about donating just for the extra cash.

I've emailed back and forth with many egg donors and participated in forums. The consensus is that it really is about the joy of helping a couple to have a baby. It's hard not to get excited for someone else who announces that their intended parents got pregnant. The most exciting part for me is knowing that everything I went through caused a pregnancy for a couple. I can't put a price on that.

On another note, I heard about a book which I will put on my reading list. "Confessions of a Serial Egg Donor" by Julia Derek.

An anonymous comment was made here on a previous post and I think she makes an excellent point, it's worth discussing.....

"I am also LDS and sent in my application to donate eggs two weeks ago. I haven't been selected yet, but I was very suprised to see that the church was not supportive of donation. I have known many couples with infertility problems and it is very hard on them. I think it is amazing that I can help a couple have children. The intended mom carries the child, which to me makes you much more attached than being biologically connected. Also, I find it interesting because they support adoption (neither parent is biological) but not donation (at least the dad is a blood relative). In my opinion that child is not really mine. It is the couple that has it. And supporting someone to have a family should be the most important."

I'm not sure why the LDS church discourages sperm donation, egg donation and surrogacy. However, doing any of those things is not forbidden and will not keep an LDS person out of the temple nor are there any repercussions. I recently had a conversation with my stake president (I think he would be on the same level as a Catholic bishop?). He quoted out of the church handbook that it is a personal matter. Basically, my church is worried about legal, emotional, and physical repercussions of taking part in these things (especially in the future). These are valid worries, I can understand being concerned for the wellbeing of it's members. Still, this doesn't answer any questions about why the church encourages adoption.

My theory.... Let's say a teenager gets pregnant, in most instances, she cannot provide what this baby needs to thrive (financially, emotionally, etc). My church encourages adoption for the welfare of the baby. The baby is already on its way into the world and probably as a result of a mistake, it was unintentional. In the case of IVF, a couple decides to bring another life (spirit) into the world rather than adopt a child/baby in need. Some people feel IVF is sort of like anti-adoption. I don't feel this way. I think having a baby or adopting are very personal decisions and should be respected no matter which way a couple decides to go.

Another theory about IVF and egg donation... Let's say an egg donor gives a couple her eggs and the contract isn't very clear about what is allowed and what isn't. Later on in life, this egg donor decides to track down the family and fight for custody (or visitation). Or let's say I get ovarian cancer as a result of pumping hormones into my body. Nature isn't going to be kind to me just because I helped another couple, maybe I'll get lucky, but I can't think for a moment that I won't experience any repercussions as a result of what I'm doing. The reality of it is that I could. Here's another scenario... a sperm donor spreads his seed around and 25 years later, two half-siblings end up married (ewww). There are many nightmarish things that could happen, it is possible that my church was thinking of these complications when they added that part about sperm donation, egg donation and surrogacy to their handbook.

My agency informed me that the clinic near Toronto is going to be sending me the blood test kit and vaginal swabs for me to complete. They like my blood tests to be no more than 6 months old. By the time I start my next protocol, the last blood test will have expired.

The clinic will also locate a pharmacy that has Marvelon 21 in stock. So far, it's the only birth control that I can tolerate without the usual moody side effects. I told them that if they wanted my husband on board for any future donations, then I needed something that didn't alter my personality. I will start those mid December when my next period starts.

Predictable

I started my period almost 2 weeks after the donation as I expected. And of course, it was a long period - lasting about 12 days. I'm getting some frequent headaches, who knows if it has anything to do with this last donation or not. It could be a result of coming off of the hormones and bouncing back to normal or some other factor. I'm also back on my gym schedule so it could be the change in activity, I probably just need more water in my system.

I'll be scarce until my next donation. I am going to help out the same couple I donated to last October of 2007. We are shooting for February of 2009 so I could be starting the birth control in December. I'll update the blog then, unless something comes up. I just emailed my agency to ask if this recent couple became pregnant so hopefully I will hear back soon.

Yesterday I got home, everything was smooth with the flight and we're happy to be home. My boys are so happy to have us home too. I'm still bloated today. My jeans still fit, but they are tight. I know it will go away within a few days so I'm not too worried about it. I got a sweet delivery today, here is a picture....

Day After

After my post yesterday, my husband and I stayed in for most of the day. I ventured out with him to get dinner at Jack Astors (totally recommend it) and watched a movie later on in the hotel room. I had a rough time using the bathroom, it was a deep stabbing pain. However, I knew that it would be better today and it was. It gets better every day as it has for my previous donations.

I spent most of today in a car so I wouldn't over exert myself. We enjoyed the sights, bought some fudge - heaven knows I deserve a little :) and taking it easy. We travel tomorrow - it's quite an early start, but we'll be home before our kids get home from school so that will be a nice surprise. I know they really really miss us, I can hear it in their voices. My oldest has been asking me every day to tell him how many days before we come home. I think he's really looking forward to the little gifts we got him. My boys are so easy, they'll forgive us for leaving them as long as they get something out of the deal.

Donation Day

This morning I went to the clinic at 8:15am as instructed. The doctor called me into his office at about 8:30 and I signed the usual agreement with him - basically that I would sue him in Ontario if something went wrong (not in the States). I can't ever see myself doing that. He noticed that this was my 4th time and asked if they make things comfortable enough. I complimented him and his staff on their efficiency and told him I donate exclusively to parents at this particular clinic through my agency. My experiences have always been positive. He also checked my chart and let me know that the couple I helped in July of 2007 did have their baby. That made me happy.

After a little small talk about this area and photography (a hobby we both share), he led me down to the room where the procedure would take place. I had to undress from the waist down and laid on a table. The doctor makes IV's look easy, he has done it each time I've donated here and it barely hurts (he put it on the back of my right hand). I was given pain medication through the IV and then some drug to make me feel like I was 1000 pounds - it also made me really sleepy. I sort of drifted in and out. I reminded him that he once told me I was chatty on this drug, today was no exception. I don't think I said anything embarrassing, just chatting about the beautiful areas I've visited with my husband.

The actual procedure took very little time, maybe 20 minutes. The nurse helped dress me and walked me to a room with a bed. I slept a little and was given the 'okay' to call my husband to pick me up. I left the clinic by 10am. I walked pretty slow, still feeling heavy from the drugs. I didn't feel like I would pass out, but I certainly couldn't drive myself back to the hotel so that's where a travel companion comes in handy. Last October, one of the nurses saved me a taxi fare and took me back.

I've been sleeping since I got back and I think most of the drugs have worn off. It hurts a little to use the bathroom, but not too bad. I'm also bleeding, but not too heavily. It's pretty normal if I'm comparing it to my last 3 donations. It should taper off tonight, I may spot a little tomorrow too.

I've been eating a lot of yogurt lately to restore the good bacteria to my system since antibiotics kill everything. I don't want to be constipated, it would be a pain-nightmare after a procedure like this.

Overall my experience was positive, I feel good about what I'm doing and hoping for the very best for the intended parents.

HCG

Last night at 9:30pm I gave myself the HCG shot subcutaneously (just under the skin - not the big long needle into the muscle). It didn't hurt too much last night, but I'm pretty sore today. It feels like a fist sized bruise on my abdomen where I gave myself the shot. I gave myself 1cc so it felt like a lot and it burned going in.

I've also been instructed to take antibiotics, I took 2 yesterday and 4 today. I will have to take a different one after my donation.

I'm not suppose to eat or drink after midnight tonight and tomorrow before the donation. That won't be a problem - the donation happens in the morning so I won't be really hungry till after the donation.

My husband and I visted some old towns outside of Toronto, we saw Caledon and Alton. It was beautiful! It was also perfect that we weren't walking a lot because I'm pretty sore. I anticipate tomorrow will be a down day at the hotel room, I'll probably be sleeping off the drugs so I may update tomorrow night.

Today's ultrasound

I went in for my routine blood test and vaginal ultrasound this morning. Everything looks really good, I have 7 folicles on the left and 14 on the right. I think it's pretty normal for one to be stronger than the other (at least it is for me). I'll ask the doctor if this is my pattern since I've donated at this clinic 2 other times.

It also looks like I'll be triggered tonight, which means I'll probably be giving myself the HCG shot. If I give myself the shot tonight, then I'll be going in for my procedure on Sunday. That will be nice because I could really use an extra day to recover. On two of my last trips to Toronto, I was flying out the next day which was tough on my body. Usually it takes an extra day before I can stand up straight, the pain in my lower abdominal area causes me to walk hunched over.

Well, I'm in a city outside of Toronto - but unless you know this area, you probably wouldn't know this city. It's a beautiful area, everything is still green with just a hint of fall colors. Some trees are beginning to change, they make wonderful pictures. My husband and I flew in Tuesday evening and spent yesterday traveling to upstate New York for some sites. We have a lot on our list of things to do so it will be a great week.

Every morning I go in for a blood test and ultrasound around 7am. I got my antibiotics and HCG drugs yesterday. I am not suppose to take it until they tell me to, my donation date is suppose to be Sunday or Monday. What I love about this clinic is that they are so efficient. Everything is done in an organized fashion, I am usually in and out of there within a 1/2 hour and the staff is friendly.

I leave for Toronto tomorrow (early early morning) with my husband. I'm looking forward to helping a couple to start a family and spending time with my husband. I have a lot to do today in preparation of this trip.

I'm still taking 10 units of Lupron and 225 of Gonal F (sounds like a lot, but their needles are different and measurements are not the same). Tomorrow I decrease that to 125 units. I've got a bunch of little bruises and tiny red dots on my tummy where I've been giving myself the shots. Some days I hardly feel it and other days I must hit the wrong spot at the wrong angle - thus the bruise. Oh well, it's a small price to pay for what I'm doing. A child could come out of this and it motivates me to move forward.

Appointment Day

I had 2 things on my agenda today, a vaginal ultrasound (yay, fun!) and a blood test. The lady who was doing the ultrasound assumed I was trying for a baby and getting fertility treatment in Canada because it was less expensive. She probably wouldn't have guessed that I was actually an egg donor. I didn't feel like telling her, it's a small town (somewhat) and no one's business. The last time I told a technician, she sort of freaked out like I was an alien - she'd never met an egg donor before. It wasn't a negative experience, just uncomfortable. So I decided to keep it to myself for the future.

The blood test was routine, easy and quick. I got it all done before 10am so they could get the results faxed over to the doctor. They should know whether I'm still on schedule or not. If everything is good, then I should be starting my Gonal-F shots tomorrow.

Tickets booked!

My coordinator put together my itinerary and booked my tickets on Monday. She called as soon as she did it so I could book my husband's tickets. It worked out so that my husband will fly with me on all of my flights. I called the airline and they've arranged for us to sit together so this will be nice. Kind of like a little vacation..... except for that little egg donation detail ;)

I am pretty excited about working with this doctor and his staff, they've been really good to me and they treat me like a human. My first donation was different, it was in downtown Toronto and everything was so disorganized. I felt that my time wasn't worth anything to them which kind of made me feel like I wasn't important or needed. However, I was so lucky with my 2nd and 3rd donation that I only work with this clinic now. No exceptions. They are warm and inviting, professional and organized - simply the best.

I started Lupron yesterday

Yesterday, I started Lupron and it was also my last day on birth control. I am taking inactive pills this week, but am waiting to hear back from my coordinator on whether I can just skip those inactive pills. When I was on the last birth control pill, there were only 21 pills so I didn't have to worry about it. I should be getting my travel itinerary today sometime (keeping my fingers crossed). Hopefully I can get my husband on the same flight so we can travel together.

I received my protocol

The agency sent me my protocol early this week. I will be traveling on September 9th and returning on the 16th. The doctor has 2 vacations to work around so hopefully everything goes off without a hitch and we don't have any complications. I'm very predictable on birth control so I am confident everything will be just fine. I start Lupron on August 24th and I start Gonal-F on September 4th.

When I started birth control, I was originally on Marvelon 21 for 2 cycles. I actually liked this one so I sent a message to my agency to have the clinic note that this one agrees with my system. I hardly noticed a difference. Well as luck would have it, I needed a 3rd pack of birth control for this 3rd and final cycle before starting the injections and Marvelon 21 was out of stock. So I got "Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo" (low hormone). For the first week, I was doing my best to hold back the anger I would spontaneously feel for no reason at all. I have a difficult time on birth control, extra hormones have always effected my mood in a negative way. Marvelon 21 was the exception. So I started taking an extra B vitamin and something called Sam-E which has been working so well. I feel normal again.

Well it seems we are having scheduling conflicts left and right. So there won't be a July or August donation. It is being moved back to September. I'm a little bummed that I have to stay on birth control for an extra month, but oh well. I'm not upset at all because it feels less hectic this way. We have a lot going on this summer and it will be nice to go when it's not too hot. Plus, I was just thinking of how much I enjoyed the fall colors last year, but felt like I was a little too late for the show. I might be luckier this year.

Change of plans

Instead of donating around the 3rd week of August, the doctor is moving it up to the last week of July. So things should be speeding up here pretty quickly. I should have travel plans and a protocol within a few days.

8 Vials of Blood

It seems like a lot of blood when 8 vials are lined up in the styrofoam box. I had them drawn today after I had vaginal swabs at the OBGyn. As soon as I was finished, I went to a nearby FedEx office and shipped them off. Everything worked out seamlessly.

I have found that this birth control isn't as bad as the others. I think we may have a winner here. My husband commented that my personality hasn't changed, that makes me feel good. Of course, I am still taking the Sam-e and an extra vitamin B complex.

Birth Control

I started birth control today, the doctor said it would be easier to manipulate my period this way. So I'm glad they went along with my plan, being more predictable is going to be best for everyone. Now I just have to take some extra B vitamins and Sam-e just in case this brand of birth control has an effect on my mood as the others have.

Timing

I've got my various tests scheduled for Monday the 16th. I had an idea to start birth control this coming Sunday so that I will be predictable. I've had experiences in the past where I've been late and it tends to mess things up so it would be less stressful for everyone if I manipulated my periods. My coordinator said there shouldn't be a problem with it, but she will check with the doctor to be sure.

If everything works out right, then I could be in Toronto around the 21st of August (or the 3rd week). I did the math and my last donations were 44 and 47 days after my period. I expect it would be similar this time. So if I can manipulate my period to come on July 8th, then it would work out just right. I would be here for a commitment on August 9th and miss it by almost 2 weeks, plus I'd be home before my kids started school (not crucial, but a bonus). Can you tell I'm a planner?

I am donating sometime in August, I will have a better idea of the exact date when I start my July menstrual cycle. I received my blood and vaginal test kit, it's the policy of my agency to have a new test done every 6 months. I think I am suppose to wait until this month's menstrual cycle ends to get the testing done, I will clarify that with my coordinator in the morning.

I also received birth control which I will begin taking in July after my cycle. I'm not excited about birth control because they always have an affect on my mood, but I did request a low-estrogen dose and I plan to take extra B-vitamins plus Sam-e. I'm sure the combination will be enough to make me feel normal.

I didn't know if I would be, but just thinking about the couple who now has a baby because of me still makes me smile. This time, my husband will come along and we'll make a little vacation of it. Egg donation has a real pull on me. There is something addicting about knowing I have a part in helping a couple to have a baby. It was on my last trip to Toronto that I learned that one of the couples I helped were pregnant and healthy. They could be due sometime at the beginning of this summer (I won't know any specifics because everything was anonymous). I am still waiting to hear back about the couple who received my eggs in the fall. I am keeping them in my prayers and hoping for the best.

In other news, my husband has agreed to allow me one more donation. I know I keep saying this is the last one, but I am pretty sure it really is. I will be 29 this year and once I hit 30 in 2009, I'm not too old to donate, but couples probably prefer a younger donor. I think the cut off age is 33-35 with most agencies. Also, donations take a real toll on my body emotionally and physically. I will keep you posted on how things work out. I've already contacted the agency to let them know about my decision.

I started my period today

I was pretty close with my prediction. I just started my menstrual cycle today and should be finished before New Years Eve (or be on a super-light day) which couldn't be better timing. So that was 49 days after the first day of my last period if I'm counting right.

Long period!

My period lasted 11 days, pretty typical if I compare it with the last 2 donations. It wasn't super painful, just an extra day of heavy bleeding and a few extra days of light bleeding. Overall, not too bad. I don't expect my next period until after Christmas. It's usually 50 days after the start of this last one and very typical of all donors. Other donors say 45 or more days out depending on the individual.

Menstrual Cycle

My period started today (officially). I don't count the last 2 days because it was light as usual. My cramps after a donation are no stronger than any other normal period. The only thing which is different is the bleeding. It is darker and has more clots in the beginning, also there is more blood. I've never had trouble with periods, I just go on as normal and even used the elliptical machine in my basement for 25 minutes. My next period should start in about 50 days as it usually does after an egg donation.

Swelling has gone down

It has been more than a week and I feel like I am getting my tummy back to the way it was. I was bloated after the procedure and the swelling went down slightly every day. I could still wear my clothes, but they were more snug. I also rarely have pains in my ovaries, just once in a while if I overdo it or move the wrong way. I expect that things will be back to normal very soon. My period should start Friday or Saturday if everything is on schedule. After that, I should not get another period for about 50 days (can't complain about that!).

I have started a detox regimine and system cleanse for my body which includes suppliments from Shaklee (Liver DTX, Vitality for women, Soy Protein, Fiber Tablets, NutriFeron, and HerbLax). All of the info about these can be found at Shaklee.com. Also part of the plan is to get back into my exercise routine. I will wait until after my period has come and gone before doing that, just to be sure my ovaries are more recovered.

I'm Back

I had a good time in Ontario, it was great to see so many fall colors, there's nothing like fall on the east coast! I was a little sore on Sunday, it hurt to stand up straight, but I was pretty good at faking it in public. It's a good thing I was mostly sitting. I took a road trip to Tweed - the doctor recommended that area for the pretty fall colors and lakes, I really enjoyed it. I made a lot of stops to take pictures, it was so nice to see a small town after spending the week in an urban area.

By Monday, my pains were mostly gone. I only got sharp pains if I sneezed or moved too quickly. The flight home was long, but I kept busy with a really good book. I was stuck in a window seat for the longest of the 3 flights so I didn't drink much - probably a mistake. I am making up for it today to prevent OHSS (Ovarian Hyper Stimulation Syndrome). I feel a little bloated and have about 5 pounds to work off - it is probably a combination of the hormones and the extra pasta that I treated myself to last week.

My husband and kids were so happy to see me, I sure missed them! I was also surprised by a bouquet of flowers from the agency and the intended parents. It was so nice of them! I truly feel appreciated and I am praying for a pregnancy, I know how much they want it.

I spoke with my coordinator and was surprised to learn that the intended father was very curious about me. I told her that I would love to be in contact with them if they wished it. She will look into the contract to see if there is anything against it. I will understand either way. I knew that this was anonymous from the beginning and that when the children are 18 years old, they may or may not contact me. I can't help but be curious about the families I've helped, but would make no effort to find them because I signed a contract. However, if they wanted to find me and the agency was in agreement, then that would be really neat.

One good thing about being anonymous - the intended parents can blame any less desirable personality/physical traits on me. If they actually know me, then they might have to shoulder at least some of the blame :D

Evening After Donation

It is about 8 hours after my donation appointment this morning. I was just a little uncomfortable earlier so I took 2 Tylenol. I've been instructed to take antibiotics to reduce the risk of post retrieval infection. I still walk a little hunched over, it hurts to stand up straight so I'm hanging out in my hotel room all evening. The agency I am working with has allowed 1 pay-per-view movie so that helped to pass the time and get my mind off of the discomfort. I'm not in pain when I am just sitting still. It does hurt to use the bathroom because any pushing puts pressure on my tender ovaries, but it doesn't hurt nearly as bad as it did on my first donation in March. I also have a little more bleeding with this one, kind of like a light period so I have to use a tampon.

The doctor said he got 17 eggs and that the couple was so excited. They asked the nurse to pass along the message that they are grateful. It makes me feel good to be able to help someone like this. The doctor also asked if he could have my permission to call on me in the future if the same couples I've donated to ask for more children from their donor. I agreed, however, I warned him that I may not be up to it. It's one thing to donate to these same 2 couples, but it's another to donate to more strangers. I do not wish to donate to more strangers, I've made my decision on that. Hopefully, these couples both get their complete family from the eggs I've donated.

Donation Day

I did end up taking the HCG when I had guessed I would and had yesterday off. I took the drive out to Niagara Falls on Thursday evening to get some night pictures. I heard on the radio that the full moon was 15% larger because of our position so that was good news. As the sun went down and the moon came up over Lake Ontario, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of it and had to pull off the nearest exit to get pictures. I continued on to Niagara Falls and got some really nice shots. I was out really late and I slept in on Friday and read a lot. The area where I gave myself the HCG shot was really sore, there is a bruise. Unlike my first donation in March, this needle was small and I could give it to myself in the stomach. I think it was just a bit thicker than the needles I used for Lupron and Gonal F because it gave me quite a pinch.

This morning I took a taxi to the hospital for my retrieval. I was there by 7:30am and sat in the very crowded lobby to wait for the doctor to call me. He was on time and didn't make me wait at all. I signed a paper (basically an agreement that I know the risks and agree to sue him in Ontario if he messes up - but he is really good so I'm not worried). He also let me know that the couple I donated to in July are pregnant and a few weeks along, enough that he thinks it will stick. This is great news to me! I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that something I did will help this couple to fulfill their dream to have a baby. I have so many happy emotions running through me right now and sincerely hope it will be good news for this couple who will get my ovum today.

We made small talk about photography and then he took me downstairs to prepare for the procedure. I got an IV in the right hand and some fluids were immediately started. He injected a drug into the IV which relaxed me, it made me feel 100 pounds heavier all of a sudden. I was talking about photography with him and could feel my words trailing off like I was too tired to talk. He told me I could go to sleep if I wanted (and it was probably a hint), but this particular drug makes me chatty because I couldn't really sleep. I could relax and let the ceiling dance, but didn't really go out like most others probably do. I don't think I said anything too embarrassing. The staff is very kind, I really like this clinic and the doctor has very polite bedside manner. I felt comfortable there and I felt appreciated for what I am doing.

The procedure took about 15 minutes, but I wasn't too aware of time so I don't know for sure. It was just a little uncomfortable on the left side, mostly pressure - not pain. The drugs did a good job of dulling any pain. After I was done, the nurse helped to dress me and moved me to a room with a bed. I laid down to close my eyes for awhile. She needed to take me to another room because the couple was there at the clinic and they didn't want us to run into one another. I wouldn't have minded, but it was in the contract that I'm suppose to be anonymous so I guess it's best to follow the rules. I was in a wheelchair in a room and waiting for a few minutes. I started to read which was probably a mistake, my eyes shouldn't be working too hard after the drug. I felt nauseated and nearly puked, but was able to hold it in - which is almost as bad as actually throwing up. As soon as I laid down, the nausea subsided and I felt better. I slept off the drugs and it was about 11:30am when I got up and chatted with the doctor once more. He recommended a beautiful place up north called Belleville and it takes about 1.5 hours of driving because he knew that I enjoyed photography. I also got to see some of his pictures of Africa, he went on a safari this summer. I joked with him that if being a doctor didn't work out, then he could do really well as a photographer. He had some amazing shots of the wild life, the kind I see on calenders. One of the nurses gave me a ride back to the hotel and I plan to relax today.

Zooming through this cycle

My appointments are pretty normal, I go in for the routine blood test and ultrasound, then get the okay from the nurse that there is nothing else I need and go back to the hotel. I got some HCG and antibiotics for the time when I will be using them. The doctor says I am "zooming through this cycle" and will donate Saturday instead of Sunday. So that is good news to me, it means I get an extra day to recover. Recovering was hard with this doctor in July, it was easier than I thought it would be (comparing to the first time). Hopefully it will be the same for me.

I was told that on donation day, I was to take a taxi to the hospital and one of the nurses would drive me back to the hotel. I am waiting for a phone call (should come within 2 hours) to tell me what to do next. They had me take 150 units of Gonal F on Tuesday and only 75 units yesterday. I am guessing I will stop taking Gonal F and be taking HCG tonight at the specified time. I will update again after the call.

Yesterday I went to Niagara Falls. I didn't spend much time there because I've been there a few times this year and it hasn't changed. I did get some good pictures of a rainbow over the falls so that was neat. I went into upstate New York and as far as Palmyra. The colors of fall are amazing, I took a lot of pictures. I am sure I can get prints for some of them and sell them at the next art show. I didn't get back until midnight last night so I was super tired this morning. I came back to my room and slept for a couple of hours before getting up for the day. I get to see the sun rise in the morning as I drive back from my appointment, it's so pretty and the perfect time to get pictures of some parks I pass on the way back. I will have to remember my camera tomorrow. Tonight, I am thinking of going back to Niagara Falls to get night shots. I have figured out a few more things with my camera and am eager to try it out.

I'm in Canada

Yesterday was extremely long! I got up at 6:30am to begin my day, was on my first flight by 9:30am and arrived around 10:30pm at Pearson International Airport in Toronto. Getting to the hotel was easy, I checked in and went to my room - it smelled like cigarette smoke so I asked to be switched. My new room is better, I would have suffered from a headache if I had to sleep in a room that smelled like an ash tray. I called my family and the agency to let them know I was safe, it was nice to hear my children. I miss them! My oldest son got into some trouble at school and when he was punished at home, he cried on my bed. He missed me and it breaks my heart to be away from him. This is definitely my last donation, I can't miss another week with my children at their tender young ages. I hope they'll forgive me for being away from them.

I didn't get to bed until midnight and I had to wake up at 6am to get to my 7am appointment. Everything ran smoothly this morning, I had my blood test and ultrasound. I'm a bit tired so I think I'll sleep a little. It's raining right now and it wouldn't be much fun to head into town for any sort of sight seeing. The rain is suppose to stop after noon. In the mean time, I have my book to keep me company. I'm currently reading Twilight by Stephenie Meyer for the second time, I'm addicted to this series - it's pathetic!
